Reducing Energy Usage of NULL Convention Logic Circuits using NULL Cycle Reduction Combined with Supply Voltage Scaling

چکیده
The NULL Cycle Reduction (NCR) technique can be used to improve the performance of a NULL Convention Logic (NCL) circuit at the expense of power and area. However, by decreasing the supply voltage, the power of the NCR circuit can be reduced. Since NCR has increased performance, it should be possible to reduce supply voltage to decrease overall power while maintaining the original performance of the circuit. To verify this, the NCR circuit was implemented using a 4-bit by 4-bit dual-rail multiplier as the test circuit, which was simulated in ModelSim to ensure functionality, synthesized into a Verilog netlist using Leonardo, and imported into Cadence to perform transistor-level simulation for power calculations. The supply voltage of the duplicate NCR circuits was decreased until the performance matched the design of the original multiplier, resulting in approximately 25% overall lower energy usage.

Abstract: Energy-efficient design for self-timed circuits is investigated. Null convention logic is employed to construct speed-independent self-timed circuits. For error-free computation, the supply voltage automatically tracks the input data rate so that the supply voltage can be kept as small as possible while maintaining the speed requirement. For error-tolerable computation, such as soft d...

A NULL Cycle Reduction (NCR) technique is developed to increase the throughput of NULL Convention Logic systems, by reducing the time required to flush complete DATA wavefronts, commonly referred to as the NULL cycle. The NCR technique exploits parallelism by partitioning input wavefronts, such that one circuit processes a DATA wavefront, while its duplicate processes a NULL wavefront. A NCR ar...

Because of the rapid growth of portable electronics, high density integrated circuits with low energy consumption and low electromagnetic interference (EMI) at high speeds are needed. It is well known that dynamic power dissipation is directly related to the number of the signal transitions in the circuit. Functional signal transitions are desirable, where spurious transitions (or glitches), ca...
متن کاملTemperature-adaptive voltage tuning for enhanced energy efficiency in ultra-low-voltage circuits
Circuits optimized for minimum energy consumption operate typically in the subthreshold regime with ultra-low power-supply voltages. Speed of a subthreshold logic circuit is enhanced with an increase in the die temperature. The excessive timing slack observed in the clock period of subthreshold logic circuits at elevated temperatures provides opportunities to lower the active-mode energy consum...
متن کاملAccurate Throughput Derivation of Pipelined NULL Convention Logic Asynchronous Circuits
A throughput estimation formula for optimally pipelining NULL Convention Logic (NCL) asynchronous circuits was presented in the literature. However, it ignores register delays. This paper presents a precise throughput derivation formula for pipelined NCL circuits. The formula was verified by Spice simulation and can be used for static timing analysis.
